Having done neither, Mr Whicher comes off as a dick whose suspicions are more or less baseless. Nice little British period "based on a true story" murder mystery. Not really a neatly tied-up whodunit though, if that's what you're looking for. Fine enough, filled with all the British TV actors everyone recognizes, and Paddy Considine is fantastic. But ultimately the story is pretty dry and the filming makes it feel like they just used whatever costuming was laying around from other shows.

I know this is Victorian London, not known for its light and its airiness, but could some of it not have happened during the day, maybe? For the purposes of atmosphere, no doubt, but I actually began to feel a bit nyctophobic. But he drowns in the dreariness of the script; and in his own tiresome voiceover, which spells out what the drama has failed to put across; and the oppressive, unrelenting score.
Clunkier than all those heavy chains locked together. Fortunately there is an easy escape, on the remote control. The Secrets; The Suspicions of Mr Whicher; Houdini review — the detective and the escapologist are confounded by a quiet, intense little film about death.
Creative England provided crew and locations support for the production. We also had a couple of days at Saltburn, which is very close to home. So I got to stay with my parents for a few nights. And then filming at Beamish Museum in County Durham was good.
