Mike October 9, PM. Living in the country, I am constanly bothered by the field mice. I've plugged every hole I can find but they still get in. Jo October 20, PM. We tried everything, too. We finally went old school and put antifreeze on sugar cubes. We put them in areas protected from anything but the vermin. Works great! Valerie Clark October 25, AM. Jo, Does the vermin dry out like with D-Con or do they die and stink to high heaven?
I didn't want to mess with traps but I may be forced to do so. D-Con got rid of some destructive coons so I would think it would work on chipmunks. If you live in town the humane office may set out some live traps for you.
Maria Patterson September 27, PM. Ronald Haste October 28, PM. You're an idiot. Obama is not controlling mouse poison! You hit it right on the head. The power that be aren't concerned with the citizenry. They just want to make sure that when "they" kill off most of the worlds population to maintain a population of ,,, the wildlife will be pristine for "them". Brian January 29, AM. Interesting comment for a rat poison thread. Thanks for sharing and opening our minds.
Cathy April 2, AM. Wildlife, what about wildlife inside homes that this bnew product is not getting rid of. Lisa Dietter November 6, AM. You have to thank the EPA for forcing this off the market. We will all now be hosting rats and mice on our property. The diseases, fleas etc.
They rats and mice will now be able to enter our homes kitchens, basements, bedrooms and wherever they want to go. Thank you EPA, you just made our live more unhealthy! Susie November 2, AM. Yes, we as wildlife rehabbers are very concerned about them eating this bait. Sherri November 9, PM. I am sorry about your wildlife but I have grandchildren that will be effected by a nice country home that is infested with rodents and their diseases.
I am responsible enough to assure these pellets are not left out in an area that my grand babies or dogs can access them. Honestly, humans first. I need something that works! Kay Cassidy November 9, PM. I love wildlife but it's BS when the rats are eating my home up and can nolonger buy stuff to kill them that works. I am a disabled lady in a wheelchair and had to get someone to fix holes all in my floors and walls all around my house but they chewed it all up again and making new holes everywhere.
I can sit and look to the outside through the holes they make in my house. They come out and sit in the middle of my floor like they own it and I can't have my groceries in my cabinets because they eat it I have to keep them in tubs.
I can't afford to keep repairing my home every couple of weeks so I hope the people that complain about the bait never have to deal with them like I am.
So thanks for making my life miserable and rat infested. I found a few boxes left on shelves I agree with all comments that this product was the only thing that worked. I agree. They sit there looking like the day I set them out. I seems that when something works well it gets changed. Even a lot of the snap traps are different and do not works as well. I live in a country setting. Suzy February 8, PM. I agree completely. I have a summer cottage in the woods and in the past D-con granules took care of my mouse problem.
This is totally ridiculous. Someone said to try peppermint oil, well it was expensive and only worked for a couple of days. Does anyone have any ideas that will actually get rid of mice HELP!!! I tried all. This is the only product that works!!!!
The pellets are Great!! I wanted those nasty creatures Gone!! Because of the recall how am I supposed to get rid of them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If I had known they where pulling off the flakes I would have stocked up. My cat passed away summer and now I have house mice running around bodily! Driving me crazy. Using old time mouse traps but afraid one day it will catch my finger.
L Buckman October 6, AM. Im sitting here reading this n a mouse has come out of hiding n sits here looking at me. I need this product back. I have cats n dogs n they have never gotten into the dcon. Angelique Pacheco February 9, PM. I have two rats that come from in back of the stove! I been looking for the d-con pellets because your right they really work. Gina April 2, PM. To the lady that the rat is driving crazy find someone you know who is on Coumadin or warfarin and ask them for a few pills.
Break the pill in half or jf the rat is big give it a whole one. Wrap it in a piece of cheese and let him have fun eating he will die soon. Believe me I know I've done it with mice because ive tried all different kinds of poison. Since they quit selling this one and it is a waste of money none of them work as good but this does. This pill is a blood thinner and it gets rid of them. Try peanut butter on a tap. Works faster and better also does harm any ppl or other animals.
Carol C January 29, PM. Please pull d-con off shelves ASAP. Bad people use it to poison peoples pets! They are going to quit letting them sale anything that works just like they have done with the roach and flea products.
Laura M April 9, PM. It's not a case of prohibiting sale of effective products, but of the development of resistance within pest populations to pesticides. Some people prefer to grab an aerosol can and squirt a toxic product than to pick up a foot and step on the spider walking across the floor. As for the people who think rodenticides are the only effective means of killing rodents, please try traps.
They work much better, and the dying animal can't crawl off into a wall void to rot a serious problem unless you are fond of a certain odor and the flies that develop in animal carcasses. Pets and wildlife are usually poisoned by eating the "slow moving mice" that have consumed toxic bait. The poisoned but still moving rodents are much easier for your Labrador to catch. Kat October 23, AM. Laura M And what about those people here in the north who close up their cabins and go south for the winter.
They are supposed to come up once a week and empty and re-set traps? I agree that traps are best when you are on the premises regularly, however not all people have the ability to do that so it's not just as simple as "Please try traps".
Yes, I have the same problem - can't empty the traps when I'm not there. Even when I am there, I usually catch a mouse the first time I put the trap out and then never again. I hope whose every idea this was have lots of rats running around their house Amen. Bill Gourlay September 26, PM. For a cabin that will remain unoccupied where you cannot re-set traps, I have found mothballs to be an effective deterrent.
Sure it stinks, but if you're not living there that doesn't matter, and in my experience it keeps the mice away. There are also organic herbal deterrents that smell pleasant to humans, but not as effective as mothballs, but they help if you use enough of it. I had some rats in a shed i tried every kind of trap I could buy or make and none worked, they had learned to avoid them.
I talked with a mammalogist friend who is the best rat trapper perhaps in the US and took his advice but they avoided the traps. D Con worked. Nancy December 5, AM. Thank you for your comment. I cannot agree more. The owners did not put out D-con.
Many pets die before the cause can be determined. So sad! Not all vets are aware so pass the word. Kathy August 10, AM. Good point about the poisoned mice being consumed, but now that D-Con is discontinued, I have mice chewing in my walls.
Those new bait stations they came out with are too small for a fat mouse to even enter! Bob B March 23, PM. Also no longer manufactured Judy P January 17, AM. You might see a stray but he will be near death. The best stuff ever!!
Suzette July 7, PM. It isn't always peoples pets getting into others yards. Luckily I was able to rush him the vets where he is now getting treatment and will survive. So please don't assume that it is always the victims fault. It is not!!!!! I don't believe in using poison and would have never consented to the use of it in my yard. Meleven October 8, PM. Your story really isn't credible - MOST ppl would be outraged by what you claim!
Meleven, Just because a person doesn't air all their grievances in a way that you see fit, does not mean they are making up a story to gain support.
Greg August 11, PM. Carey Gerig November 1, PM. Bad people can use other options to kill pets but just wait till a rat comes after your pet because it can't be poisoned and killed. I put some Tomcat mouse poison out, because that is all I can find, and it has been out for over a week. The mice haven't touched it.
I found some Dcon mouse poison put it out and it was gone in a couple of days. I bet the Tomcat company is really taking advantage of this whole thing. I have went through 6 bags of Tomcat mouse poison and still have mice. They leave the container empty and still I hear them moving about. I'm getting tired of feeding them. They need to bring back D-Con. EPA doesn't have any business messing with stuff that needs to get rid of rats and mice.
Sick of it!!! Andy March 22, AM. Won't stop me. I always just shoot them Carrie w December 22, AM. To the lady that says bad people use it to kill their pets that people use guns to kill people too we don't pull them off the shelves and I should bring the Decon back for those of you who remember the baby who got bitten by all the rats and stuff because of the milk that was on the baby did it a hundred and something times or more and we're worried about Wildlife you should be worried about our children.
Dnay July 24, PM. I am very disappointed with the decision to pull the products. I have used the rat poison in the triangle box and had amazing results. I am very responsible with it.
Now it is no longer around and the new stuff does NOT work. The rat is living it up in my garden. I am very sad to see the product go :. Peggy December 5, PM. Gayle I agree with you this new mess does not work the mice don't go in the little plastic box I went as far as to open it and crunch it up the mice has not touched it.
Bernice Schwisow January 19, PM. Whitaker March 23, PM. You are right it does not work at all unless they can come up with something better will not buy anymore. It's been out for 4 weeks and not even touched.
Can see the rats running around.. Amoinz June 15, AM. David Nipper October 23, PM. I used the loose pellets for years and always got excellant results with no problems. What am I to do? Theodore E. Podkokwa November 11, AM. The environment is getting out of hand. Used correctly, it is safe.
If you have pets or children, just use another product. Simple as that. Theodore Podkowka. JV November 30, PM. There is no attractant in rodent bait. It's simply made of a rodenticide and other compounds known to be consumed by rodents. Some rodents also become bait shy or will ignore it if there is another food source available to them. Lisa Hofmann December 7, PM. I have seen my cat eat a mouse outside but inside she is oblivious.
First the EPA has a long history of approving substances that are banned throughout world as cancer causing and they ban many things that actually work saying more "studies needed" which leads to the 2nd thing.. Isn't Warfarin the anticoagulant that doctors give to People and People are dying cause doctors cant stop the blood?? Its an alligator!
In St Louis! Some people just won't listen to logic and reason but that's a whole separate issue. Have a nice day. Ruth February 6, PM. Mary February 14, PM. Mice and Rats are infesting peoples homes! That new stuff is a joke. And wasting our money and time! I am furious that you removed our only way to get rid of these diseased rodants!
Thats just an Excuse not to sell it! Bring it BACK!!!! I dont want to Waste anymore money Buying all these new Stupid traps and food for mice!
I hate them! Probably even YOU. There not our pets! Get real. Bob August 20, PM. Try cleaning around where you live. Don't leave seeds and bird feed out. Buy a cat. Any thing that does kill other animals after they fed on the poisoned rats. Even keeping the place clean won't prevent rats living in your warm dry space.
Rat trap with a hair trigger is best, most humane? Most homes will have a rat at one point. Rats do a good job of staying out of the way and undetected for the most part.
The only way I know if we have a rat is holes bored in the bread! Right, I've had a cat that sometimes killed mice and other times just looked at the mice running around, like I don't feel like chasing right now. Dogs are effective if they can catch the rodent. At least my chow and chow mix are. They have killed several mice outside. The problem is once they get in the house its hard to catch them. Decon works!!! I'm so sad I can't find it in stores.
Ron Perkins October 27, PM. Yeah but there chewing the wires under hood of my truck?? Gotta have transport. Got any ideas to keep them out?? Chris January 18, PM. Moth balls should keep mice from coming around. I fixed my neighbors transmission wires twice - we figured it was mice eating the wires. One day he popped the hood and saw a big fat rabbit in there I live in the country and have tried cats, over 30 of them.
I still had mice and rats and a lot of fat coyotes and bob cats. Zelz oswald July 15, PM. Zelz July 15 youre wrong cats will catch the rat or mouse and tear up your home and furniture doing it. If you have an infestation you're lucky if they catch one or two. Amber October 10, AM. None if what you suggested works tried everything that you have listed sorry but the poison is the only way we have even tried the traps they are to smart for them and even bought a cat we tried everything that is safe but now we are the ones that are not safe with these rodents running around spreading there diseases they are nasty and dirty and need to be gone asap.
Merrell September 16, AM. Dcon is the best. Let the consumer decide James, the pet owner October 13, PM. I'm all for any action that saves pets.
I'm so blasted tired of idiots putting out rat poison and killing my animals! What's wrong with Americans? Maybe you haven't heard, but cats kill mice and rats. The rat and mouse problem can be a huge problem. Sooo, I guess people should run behind them and catch them if we can right?
If you have a better solution, please let me know. Cheryl February 11, PM. Outside their own yard, pets should be leashed at all times cats too. They should be supervised, at least with a watchful eye from a window with a clear view, in a yard even with a 6-foot fence.
As a vet tech, I've witnessed the tragic results of poisoning, and even more hit by cars and wounded in attacks by both cats and dogs. Irresponsible pet ownership makes everyone suffer. People who love their pets invest time and energy in their happiness.
My first cat lived to go outdoors; he and I walked hundreds of miles together in his 18 years, and his young replacement is following in his footsteps. Practice Details. What To Expect. Emergency Veterinarians. Support Staff. Dermatology and Allergy. Internal Medicine. Neurology and Neurosurgery. The pellets are only sold in D-Con rat poison trays with no tamper-resistant cover. D-Con offers both disposable and refillable bait stations , depending on your level of comfort.
D-Con bait stations feature:. Here are the most important benefits and drawbacks to consider when choosing D-Con rodenticide products. D-Con offers a few types of poison bait products designed to fit different needs.
D-Con Wedges work best for hard-to-reach areas. Disposable bait stations are a good choice if you do not want to handle bait at all. Refillable bait stations are the most cost-effective solution and can be used indoors and outdoors.
The key to using D-Con poison effectively is placing the bait in a strategic location, removing access to other food sources if possible, patience, and safety. You can use bait stations as a standalone solution or combine them with other strategies for best results. This includes removing clutter from around the outside of your home, checking for and fixing any possible entryways into your home like cracks and openings around pipes, and rodent traps.
To increase your chances of success, place D-Con bait stations where you find evidence of rodents, including areas with droppings or where you have noticed signs of gnawing or nesting.
Always place the bait stations against walls or hard surfaces, never in the open, because rodents travel along walls for safety. The bait stations should be placed perpendicular to the wall in dark or secluded areas like under the sink or behind appliances in a way that a mouse traveling along the wall will walk through the entrance to investigate the food source.
It may take a few days before you see signs that mice are feeding on the bait. Check the clear window on top of the bait station regularly. Once you see signs of feeding, it will take a few days for the mice to die. If there is no evidence of feeding after a few days, relocate the bait station to a new area. You do not need to unwrap new D-Con bait.
The new formulation uses mostly food-grade ingredients to make the bait attractive to rodents that will easily eat through the wrapper. To refill the bait station, look for the latch on the bottom of the lid and the top button. Use one hand to pull the bottom latch while pressing the button on the top. Bait stations are always preferred over loose poison bait or pellets because tamper-proof bait stations keep pets, children, and other animals safe from accidental poisoning.
To protect your pets and family, always use the D-Con tamper-proof bait station ; do not place the refill bait unprotected in your home or around the house. Over time you should notice that there are no more droppings, and all scratching sounds should have totally stopped. Product Finder Choose Your Solution. Shows the "evidence" One station kills one rodent.
